Mother the match maker Betty Friedman, Sam Faberman's wife-to-be, was 10 years old in 1913, when she and her mother posed in their best coats for this studio portrait. Betty's mother, Rachel Friedman, ran the newstand where Sam bought his newspaper, and it came to pass that one day she told him about her daughter. In due course, Sam and Betty met, and they were married on St. Patrick's Day in 1935. Sam passed away from a massive heart attack in 1951, and Betty lived 44 years longer and never remarried. "She didn't want her children to have a stepfather," said her daughter, Rhoda Faberman Isaacson. |
