Special edition
March 2002 CousinsPlus Gazette

Greetings, CousinsPlus cousins,

The occasion for this special edition is the extraordinary flute performance by cousin Norma Rogers heard for an entire week from WPLN, the National Public Radio station in Nashville, TN, and captured forever on our web page.  She plays a little Bach, then there's a cellist, and finally, Norma does a modern piece that astounded the Nashville Public Radio announcer. He couldn't believe the virtuosity he had just heard, and you may laugh with delight as I did.

"Live in Studio C," is what they call the program, premiered on Tuesdays, with all 27 minutes available on its web page for 7 days. (Bluegrass followed Cousin Norma.)

But thanks to the WPLN engineer, who cut and mailed me a CD, and to our Ohio Uberstine Sanford Kaplan, who taught me the software, you can hear four short excerpts on our web page (each under a minute):

After the March 16 concert -- perhaps Norma's  5th in the 27 years she has been with the Nashville Symphony and an adjunct professor at the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University -- husband Bruce sent the performance CD itself.  The last two of the six excerpts, also just under a minute apiece, are from the modern tune that suggests a jaunty train trip expressed through bursts of apparently effortless virtuosity, which end with a ground-breaking, comic attempt to resemble a train whistle.

Scroll on down, after the sound links, and you'll find yourself in a many-photo feature about Norma's life as a symphonic piccoloist and flutist.  This was an early (1997) and especially enjoyable undertaking, being a former flautist myself, a word Norma shuns as pompous.

What else is new?  A new home page that loads in less than 10 seconds (we hope).  http://www.cousinsplus.comAlso,

putting up all twelve months of the 2002 birthdays and anniversaries calendar at once is new.

You'll see how fast it loads without my nature pictures. June has two calendars - on the same page - one for anniversaries and the other for birthdays.  The direct link:

Shalom to you all,
