Rainbow over the ocean, waves breaking on rocky beach

Our first generation in America When the children and grandchildren of future generations ask from where our family came -- we are not Native Americans -- we'll want to thank Dora Rubenstein Karben and Shirley Karben.  They were both born in Ostroshitskiy Gorodok, then 12.7 miles from Minsk, and now a suburb.

The memories of Usher Uberstine's granddaughter and great granddaughter are captured in many stories on our web page, http://www.cousinsplus.com.   Dora and her husband, Carl, talked to me in 1972 about their lives before 1923, when they came to America.  They had lived through WWI and the Russian Revolution.

"Thank goodness I did not fight for the Czar," Carl said, as we sat around their kitchen table.  What they shared that day is on our web page in Carl's Story, photo captions in The Karben Albums, and the five chapters that make up the section, Coming to America.  The photo of Dora, below, was taken before 1923.

The early years Shirley Karben was a toddler when she arrived at Ellis Island, but she was in the thick of things by the 1930's.  That's when her uncle (my grandfather), Morris Rubenstein, noticed the children of family visiting from the Bronx didn't know their Brooklyn counterparts.  He started a family circle, as was the custom of the day, and it soon grew too big for his house on Essex Street.  It moved to The Times Square Hotel, where it met one Sunday evening a month until World War II.  It drew over 100 family members, and Shirley served as secretary.  She was at the hub of our family history in America, and provided perspective, details, and 99% of the content of our web page story, Morris' Family Circle

Who showed up? Who did not?
  Shirley knew, and future generations can see most of them in that story's 27 photos.  Just a few months ago, when I told Shirley that Rashka's grandson, Sheldon Kay, was coming through town on his way to the 10th anniversary gala for the Hubble telescope at the Space Museum in Washington, D.C., Shirley reminisced about how his childhood antics "drove Rashka crazy."  After a long illness, on July 15, 2000, Shirley passed away, joining my father, who passed away a year ago today (July 31, 1999).  Hence, the choice of a rainbow for our August calendar, suggesting the route of their souls.

Three generations, three branches

URLs of interest:  The main site for public pictures by the Hubble Space Telescope: http://opposite.stsci.edu/pubinfo/pictures.html .  From there, you can find an image list by subjects, such as "galaxies" or "nebulae:" http://opposite.stsci.edu/pubinfo/SubjectT.html.   Finally, for a stunning and SCARY full-size photo of the Gaseous Pillars - M16 Eagle Nebula in riotous color: http://opposite.stsci.edu/pubinfo/jpeg/M16Full.jpg.   We have yet to learn what was served at the Space Museum, which astronauts attended, and whether Cousin Sheldon chatted with any.  His last E-mail - very brief - came from Sweden, so stay tuned.

In progress:  Our pen pal project continues to flourish, when parents are at the helm, which is now the case in half a dozen hook-ups at last count.  Anyone interested has only to send an E-mail, and we can easily determine who might be interested at any age level, as well as their relationship, thanks to what's new in Family Tree Maker (7.5).  Our latest hookup is a pair of 5th cousins from the Varonok and Bronx Gelman branches.  Their grandparents knew each other from Morris' Family Circle.

What's new on our family history web page:
* 4 photos on the August cover, including a Caine computer student 79.5 years young, and a wedding portrait of our South African Uberstein with her bridegroom in a shower not of rice but of petals;
* 18 more wedding thumbnail-size color photos on a new album page in the Faiva Uberstein branch chapter; and
A new cutie-pie in the Youngsters' Gallery who loves green olives and Dr. Seuss.
* CousinsPlus guestbook, you're invited - click here .

Best to you all,
Cousin Susan
