The Census of 1900

*Esther, who married Morris Rubenstein in 1907,  was born in August
of 1886, the month before her father left for America.   A year later, Abraham Simon had risen from laborer, his listed occupation on the S.S. Brittanic Passenger List, to peddler, as written on the census schedule above.  By 1887, he had done well enough to bring his wife and two daughters to America. 

The census of 1900 shows that Esther had been here 13 years, and was "at school" (see last column above).  David, Eva, and Lillian were born in New York in 1888, 1894, and 1896. 

Question: Why was Mollie, who was two years older than Esther, "at home" rather than at school?  See the second line under "peddler" in census excerpt below, as well as the line above Esther in the large blowup above.
