Esther-Minnie Rubenstein was the second oldest of Hirschel's five children to come to America. She and her husband, Joe Shapiro, settled in North Adams, Massachusetts, where he raised chickens and made egg deliveries in his truck. Dora Karben, who was Esther-Minnie's only sister and the youngest of the Rubenstein children, stayed with the Shapiros when she first arrived in America with her husband, Carl, and their three little children, Shirley, Phil, and Artie. Esther-Minnie was famous for her excellent pies, and when she traveled to New York City to visit family, she would arrive with the car trunk filled with everyone's favorite pies. Below: |
