grandfather on his mother's side was a first cousin to Morris's father. When his father died, Max took over his father's membership in his burial society.

Numerous Horoduker societies

At my first meeting of the Jewish Genealogical Society, I discovered on the publications table, in a large, unbound work-in-progress, a listing of numerous Horoduker (anglicized spelling) burial societies. In another volume, I also learned that there are many towns called "Gorodok."

Esther Minnie's oldest daughter, Rose, was seven years old and her brother Mickey was five years old when they posed for this cousins' portrait with eight-year-old Arthur (standing at left), nine-year-old Sidney (at right), and Larry, age 4.

When Larry, Arthur and Sidney, left to right,  posed for this undated photo, Sidney alone sported a tie.
Remembrances of the old country

My introduction to our family's history began on vacation trips from Denver, Colorado, to visit the relatives in New York City. I asked questions, made trees and took lots of now yellowing notes. In the 60's and 70s, Carl Karben, the husband of Morris' youngest sister, Dora, had a great deal to say (which has taken the form of "Carl's Story").

Getting together in the U.S.A.

We have actually had a de facto cousins' club of our own generation for some time, thanks to the ongoing networking among at least one of the two offspring of each of the four brothers: Bruce, Jerry, and Michael-David, and Robin. In the video of the wedding of Debbie and Stuart Allen, you can see an informal conference taking place in the motel swimming pool.
