As a very young man, Max had gone out west to Colorado for the climate in the hope that he would recover from TB.  He regained his health and made Denver his home.  Ida's sound message was recorded more than a decade after she sat for the photographic portrait, left.

Ida had made the long train trip to Denver, Colorado, to visit Max, probably in the late 1920s.  Max took advantage of the occasion to arrange a session at a photo studio on Champa Street.  That happened to be just around the corner from the West Hotel, which Max managed for many, many years.
